Modules / eDiscovery

# Document review without exporting your data

The eDiscovery module for DataXray reviews, redacts, and produces documents for litigation, regulatory, and privacy requests. It works on files DataXray has already read, inside your own environment, so there’s no export and no per-gigabyte hosting. AI suggests what’s responsive, and a reviewer makes every call.

What it makes possible

## Lower review costs, with every call on record

Other eDiscovery review platforms need data exported from each system, processed, and hosted at a price per gigabyte. The eDiscovery module reviews your files where DataXray has already read them.

- Files, their contents, and their classifications are known before a request is opened, so review starts without an export or a processing wait.
- Each redaction records its basis, such as attorney-client privilege, work product, or PII. The produced page carries no text under the bar, and every decision is tied to the reviewer who made it.
- AI summarizes each document and suggests whether it is responsive, using the provider you choose. A reviewer makes every decision.

The workflow

## One application, from intake to production

Configured to how you work. You choose the AI provider, who can open and review each request, and whether productions go out as a Bates-numbered package or as redacted PDFs to your records repository.

1. Open a matter, subpoena, document request, or privacy request. The module sets the statutory or agreed clock for that type.
2. Build the search with the same filters DataXray uses, per field and with AND, OR, and NOT, or write the query directly.
3. Decide responsiveness in a keyboard-driven queue with batch decisions, reviewer notes, a session undo stack, and a hand-off to a supervisor for anything that needs a second look.
4. Auto-redact detected personal data and privileged content, then rasterize so the text is gone from the produced file.
5. Generate the Bates-numbered package with a cover sheet and an exception report, or publish one redacted PDF per document plus an index file to your records repository.

Capabilities

## Review in place, under your own controls

Other eDiscovery review platforms work on a copy of your data, loaded into their own system. The eDiscovery module works on your files where they already are, so there is no second copy to secure.

- **Redactions that can’t be undone**

Each redaction is flattened into the page and records its basis, from attorney-client privilege and work product to common interest, confidential, trade secret, and PII.
- **AI where it saves review time**

Per-document summaries and responsiveness triage run on the AI provider you choose, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, or Ollama on your own hardware. Credentials are encrypted at rest, and every decision stays with a reviewer.
- **Production at scale**

Matters can hold tens of thousands of documents. Production is a folder of Bates-stamped PDFs with an index file, and large jobs keep running if you close the browser.
- **Your identity, your audit trail**

Users sign in with their DataXray credentials, and every action is attributable and logged. There is no service account.
- **Runs next to DataXray**

It runs as one container, signs in through DataXray, and needs no external services.

Request types

## Litigation, regulatory, and privacy requests, each on its own clock

Legal and privacy teams use the same module, so a subpoena and a subject access request go through the same review, redaction, and audit trail.

- Responsiveness review and privilege redaction run for each case, with continuous Bates numbering across the matter.
- Scoped search, review, and production run against the response clock.
- Large, deadline-driven productions come with an exception report for anything that could not be converted.
- Everything held on a data subject is gathered into a case file, third-party data is redacted, and the file is released within the statutory period.
- Locate every copy, record the action taken, and evidence it.
- The California request types run with their own clocks and terminology.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is eDiscovery?

eDiscovery (electronic discovery) is the process of finding, reviewing, and handing over electronic documents in response to a lawsuit, investigation, or regulatory request. Teams search for relevant material, review it for responsiveness and privilege, redact what’s protected, and produce the rest, usually with Bates numbers. Privacy requests such as GDPR subject access requests follow a similar process.

### What is DataXray eDiscovery?

eDiscovery is a DataXray module that runs litigation, subpoena, regulatory, and privacy-request review on DataXray's index. It covers scoped search, keyboard-driven responsiveness review, rasterized privilege and PII redaction, and Bates-numbered production.

### Do I need DataXray to use eDiscovery?

Yes. eDiscovery is a DataXray module and works from the files DataXray has already read and classified, so no file is read twice.

### Can it be configured to our needs?

Yes. You choose the AI provider, the roles for each request, and the production format, and we can extend the module when you need something it doesn't do yet.

### Does it run in air-gapped or classified environments?

It runs wherever DataXray runs, including air-gapped networks.

### Does it replace our review platform?

Yes, for matters where the data lives in systems DataXray reads. Your team reviews, redacts, and produces in your own environment, so there is no export to a hosted review platform and no per-gigabyte hosting.

### Is redacted text really removed?

Yes. Redaction is rasterized, so the produced page has no text layer under the bar. The original file is never modified.

### Which AI providers can it use?

It works with Anthropic, OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, or Ollama for fully local models. AI summarizes and triages, and reviewers decide.

### How is it deployed?

It runs as one container beside DataXray, with a local database and no external services. Users authenticate with their DataXray credentials.

### Does it cover FOIA as well?

Not in eDiscovery. FOIA, Privacy Act, and declassification review run in the same engine under the government profile, sold as [AutoFOIA](https://www.dataxray.io/modules/autofoia/).
