# Complete file context for your Atlan environment

DataXray and Atlan together give you governed context across structured and unstructured data. DataXray reads and classifies the files across your estate, then feeds classification signals and file context directly into Atlan's Enterprise Context Layer, so documents, PDFs, emails, contracts, scanned images and archives are governed alongside your tables, and AI agents working from Atlan never operate on a partial picture.

## Why Atlan needs file context

A context layer is only as reliable as the data behind it. Atlan governs structured data well, but much of what an organization knows lives in files: contracts, reports, emails, scans and archives. If those files are unclassified before they reach the context layer, AI agents and analysts are already working from incomplete or incorrect information. This is where most AI-readiness efforts quietly fail.

## What the integration delivers

The integration brings file content into Atlan as governed metadata. DataXray discovers and classifies the files, and Atlan receives the classifications, file context and governance signals it needs to show sensitive data, access risk and AI readiness across the whole estate, not only its databases.

- **Discover and classify file content**

  across the enterprise automatically.
- **Feed classification signals and file context**

  directly into Atlan.
- **Extend Atlan's Enterprise Context Layer**

to documents, PDFs, emails, contracts, scanned images and archives.
- **Surface sensitive data, access risk and AI-readiness signals**

  across your full data estate.
- **Support data maps, DSARs and records of processing activities**

  that include file content.

## How it works

DataXray does the reading and classifying; Atlan holds the result as part of its context layer. The flow runs in three stages, continuously and without manual effort: discover the files, classify what is inside them, and activate the metadata in Atlan.

- **Discover**

DataXray reads files across the estate: more than 1,000 file types in over 100 languages, including nested archives and scanned documents via OCR.
- **Classify**

Layered classification combines NLP and machine-learning annotators, LLM-based document-level categorization, and your own business rules to identify what is sensitive, valuable and exposed, with 98.7% classification accuracy (measured on document-level PII/PCI detection in text-based English files).
- **Activate**

Enriched metadata, classification labels and governance outputs flow into Atlan and become part of the Enterprise Context Layer, kept current as files change.

## Enterprise-ready deployment

DataXray runs inside your environment, so file contents never leave it; only metadata and labels reach Atlan. It is agentless and containerized, operational in hours, and deploys on-premises, air-gapped, hybrid or in the cloud, with 55+ native connectors to datasource types plus a universal connector where no native one exists.

## Where it fits

Atlan is one of several catalogs and governance tools DataXray feeds. The same classifications drive retention labels, redaction and protection inside DataXray, and can be pushed into Collibra, Microsoft Purview and Virtru at the same time. See [Integrations](https://www.dataxray.io/integrations/), the [Platform](https://www.dataxray.io/platform/) overview, or all [partners](https://www.dataxray.io/partners/).

## Frequently asked questions

### What does DataXray send to Atlan?

Classification labels, file context, enriched metadata and governance outputs for the files DataXray has read. File contents stay in your environment.

### What kinds of files does it cover?

Documents, PDFs, emails, contracts, scanned images and archives, across more than 1,000 file types in over 100 languages.

### Does it replace Atlan's own classification?

No. It extends Atlan to unstructured files that Atlan does not read, so the context layer covers the full estate.
